The book starts with a very good description of the beginning of the revolution and the events leading up to it, particularly the events immediately preceding the storming of the Bastille. The description of the attempted flight of Louis XVI and his family in 1791 is the best I have seen. Unfortunately, the quality goes downhill from there. The events of the Reign of Terror are presented, but with decreasing completeness and historical perspective. This phase begins with an incomplete description of the secret correspondence of Louis with the coalition partners and emigres, but there is no insight into why Louis would have kept such incriminating evidence in the first place. We are left with a characterization of Louis as indecisive and foolishly rejecting the last chance to escape in 1792 offered by Lafayette and his supposedly loyal 30,000 soldiers, and then fatalistically accepting his trial and execution in December 1792 and January 1793. Most students of history puzzle over the rapid decline, trial, and execution of Danton (principal accuser of the king) and then Robespierre (principal accuser of Danton). The author seems to follow the simple interpretation that it was the Reign of Terror gone out of control. He does not address the age old question of whether this was primarily a mass paranoia induced by the very real threat of external military invasion by the coalition seeking to restore the monarchy. Instead of providing a good description of these battles, the author spends many pages lamenting the failure of the forces of moderation to check the excesses until the reaction of the directory in 1795 and the dictatorship of Napoleon in 1799.Product details

Excellent read. Gives a good overview of the subject. The reading is easy and even people who are not history buffs will enjoy it.
After getting into Les Misérables, I wanted to understand more of the background of why people thought and acted the way they did. So I picked up a lot of books about the period. I did not find the author completely dispassionate. I saw several paragraphs that were clearly opinions. But that is not all bad.
As a first read about the subject I think this is very good. I wanted to understand how a people could throw off nobility one year, and shortly there after choose an emperor. And yet afterwords claim "Liberty" as a driving force in their lives.
I'm not sure I really understand that yet, but I feel I know enough to continue reading and get a better understanding of what went on in this period of time.
The author does mention several names that I did not follow. Of course I am not good remembering historical names, so maybe that is my inability to follow where he was trying to lead me. Or maybe it is that this book seems to be more of an overview, a 'big picture' kind of study. Maybe he could have done a better job of building up our understanding of who these people were and how they got into the positions they held.
I never planned on this being the only book I would read on the subject. And I now feel ready to dive into a more complex book to get into more details of who what and why. It will be interesting to compare this book with my next reading, Hippolyte Taine's The French Revolution - Volume 1-3.
For those who had trouble with some of the words, I would remind them of the benefits of reading on a tablet application. There is a dictionary app available, which will give you the definition of the word, and even look the word or phrase up on the internet.
If you are going to read history, you must approach it as research, and do your part to understand what you are reading.
Over all, It gave me more knowledge of what was happening and why, I feel it was easy to read and understand. I an glad I read it.
Covers a lot of ground well. Told in a somewhat passive voice, as if he were sitting in front of the fireplace speaking to you, so younger readers may find it somewhat slow-going. Older readers will be familiar with the tone. The active voice is much more popular now.
I learned that I had very little idea of what actually happened. You are no t taught that htere were really heroes of democracy in the French Revolution.
I've been intrigued over the years about why the American Revolution worked, and the French Revolution failed. This is the first contemporary book I read on the French Revolution, written by someone who knew the main characters or at least lived in the same period. It is a book written in French obviously, and translated into English. It is heavy going in parts, especially when you try and deal with the details offered and keeping up with the characters outlined. It does not pretend to be exhaustive, but it can tend to overwhelm one with the details offered. It is written as dispassionately as possible - by someone who tried to offer a precise yet accurate account of the revolutionary period from 1789 through 1814. Fascinating history - especially when you read of names of individuals that were active in both the American and the French Revolutions. The weight of centuries of history in France weighed the odds against the Revolution's success - and ultimately gave generations of instability in French politics up to and perhaps including the modern period.
Great history, showing the chaos of that entire era.
Notice the gap between the ideals that brought about the Revolution, and the reality of the brutal actions of the leaders once they were in power.
Each group came to power, slaughtered all opponents, and then were thrown out and slaughtered by the next group to seize power.
Think of that the next time some political group marches in the streets and demands they be brought to power by any means.
